Baby left alone with note, A newborn baby was left alone with a note in a locked car as the sleeping infant's mother shopped Saturday. A photo of a lone baby in a child seat in the parking lot of a supermarket set off a firestorm after it hit local newspapers. Luckily, the baby was found by other shoppers, who used the note to call the mother. Ironically, police say it is not investigating the matter because no one has made a formal complaint, according to a March 25 Sky News report.
"Baby left with note" headlines center on what the child's mother wrote.
According to a man, who along with this wife, discovered the baby left with a note, said they had just parked alongside the vehicle when they noticed something odd.
Of the note, he said, "It was written from the baby's perspective, and it said, 'my mum's in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything', and it had the cell phone number.
"We waited there for a little bit, wondering if the mum was just going to be two seconds and come back. And my wife said, 'I'm not going in without someone being here with the baby'."
A small crowd gathered around the car as the couple investigated the matter and made an attempt to reach the mom using the telephone number left on the scribbled note.
In the end, the baby was rejoined with the mother and apparently did not suffer any health effects.
As Plunket National Child Safety adviser Sue Campbell pointed out, citing a Daily Mail report, newborn babies are vulnerable to extreme heat and cold. Not only that; infants can dehydrate quickly and are defenseless to protect themselves.
Even still, one reader said that people reading the post should not be quick to judge the circumstances of why the mother left her baby alone with a note in the car. Imagine that?
Of note: New Zealand has strict laws which make it a crime to leave a child 14 and under alone for an extended period of time. In the United States, 12-years-of-age is the common cut-off in leaving a child alone.
