Golfers are well known for opting for various questionable fashion choices, but Horschel's choice of octopus pants created even more stir than usual with some suggesting they were inappropriate for the golfer to wear at the major golf tournament.
Horschel is a rookie on the PGA Tour, but has a high profile sponsorship deal with Ralph Lauren, and so as a result wears various items of clothing in the RLX line.
Prior to the U.S. Open 2013 getting underway, the golfer tweeted various shots of the outfits he had planned to wear for the week of golf. The Twitter photos immediately created a buzz of debate on the Internet, with some enjoying the different style Horschel was bringing to the tournament, but others criticizing the choice as over the top.
Horschel himself had a solid tournament, making the cut through to the final round on Sunday. On that final day of the tournament, Horschel again tweeted a photo of himself wearing the octopus pants along with a message stating: "Well here they are! The highly anticipated highly controversial….Octopus pants! Great outfits all week by RLX!"
Horschel paired his octopus pants with a bright pink polo shirt as he teed off in eighth place on Sunday at 3-over par.
He tweeted: "Well here they are! The highly anticipated highly controversial....Octopus pants! Great outfits all week by RLX! pic.twitter.com/UrQwSYWZkB ."
The U.S. Open 2013 tournament was won by Englishman Justin Rose on Sunday night, who managed to spoil the party for American fans who had hoped Phil Mickelson would be able to hold onto his lead and claim the major. The win marked Rose's first major win, and makes him the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open for 43 years.
