Spanish man dies after winning beer chugging contest


Spanish man dies after winning beer chugging contest, Joaquin Alcaraz Gracia, 45, started vomiting after reportedly drinking 6 liters of beer in 20 minutes at a festival in Spain’s Murcia region. He died soon after arriving at a local hospital, officials said.

Joaquin Alcaraz Gracia reportedly chugged six liters in 20 minutes to win the trophy at a festival in Spain’s Murcia region.

According to The Local, Garcia “was fine” before he “started to vomit without stopping and he never spoke again.”
Onlookers thought the heavyset 45-year-old man was suffering from alcohol poisoning. They called for medical help, but officials said Garcia was in cardiac arrest by the time they arrived.

He died soon after being taken to a local hospital.
Authorities have not released an official cause of death, but alcohol consumption is believed to be a major contributing factor.

Mayor José Manuel Gracia defended the tradition, and even backtracked on his original tally. He told La Verdad that it was more like two or three liters of beer.

The contest has been a tradition in Gea y Truyols for more than 15 years, but further festivities have been suspended. The town declared an official three days mourning period for Gracia.
