NTSB intern 'no longer with agency, The National Transportation Safety Board intern who confirmed fake and racially insensitive names of the pilots on Asiana Flight 214 has been fired, according toThe Washington Post.
The NTSB has since apologized for the "inaccurate and offensive" names, which it acknowledged were mistakenly confirmed by a summer intern. The NTSB added that it is not its policy to identify crew involved in accidents, and that it's taken steps to make sure a similar gaffe does not happen again.
Oakland's KTVU Channel 2, a Fox affiliate, broadcast the incorrect names on Friday. The station also has apologized.
Asiana officials were outraged over the episode and the airline has threatened to sue that station for sullying the its reputation.
The Post suggests the incident may have been "a joke that spiraled out of control." Still, the newspaper says questions about the incident remain.
Post reporter Paul Farhi asks: "How, for instance, could anyone, let alone an intern, 'confirm' a list of names he'd never seen nor heard in the first place? And why didn't the 'joke' occur to him as he read or heard the names?"
As for the intern, NTSB spokewoman Kelly Nantel says: "He did not know they were fake names. You'd have to ask the station where they got the names from. I don't know."
