Pet food recall, A pet food recall has been issued by Nebraska-based Natura Pet Products after a positive test for Salmonella.
The pet food recall is voluntary and affects multiple brands of dry pet food and treats. The decision to issue the recall was made after an April 3 test came back positive for Salmonella.
The news will be a further hit to the company, which has been forced to issue a number of recalls in the past year alone.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, the recall involves Innova Dry dog and cat food, biscuits, bars, treats. It includes Evo dry pets foods and treats, California Natural dry pet foods and treats, Healthwise, Karma and Mother Nature brands — all lot codes and all package sizes.
According to CBS News, the products all generally have expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014. Salmonella can make pets sick and there is also a rick to humans if they handle products that are infected. The FDA has advised that people wash their hands thoroughly after contact with any of the pet food products, as well as any surfaces that have been exposed to the products.
Animals that get Salmonella poisoning can show signs of being lethargic, and they may have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. Other signs can be fever, abdominal pains and vomiting.
The FDA has confirmed that the infected Natura products were all packaged in the same production facility. However, there have been no known reports of pet or human illness in relation to the products at this stage of the recall.
